Is there any way to quiet the bike down? I have a 71 Hustler that I am trying to get back in action for my 9 year old. Is there a new or alternate muffler that I could use? Also, I need a throttle cable and a front brake cable with lever. Is there something that I can order from a more recent bike that will work? A new or alternate muffler

Jay, BIG NOTE HERE: quieting it down usually means reducing performance. But for a 9 year old, full original perf. may be a little much. My 8 1/2 year old got a scare the other day on my R2. He got to inspect the rose bushes rather closely (up to the handle bars close ) Now, on my R2 (w/ Rupp long Spark arrester muffler), I was getting a lot of backfiring and it was a bit loud. I figured that after 30 years, the internals of the sparkarrester/muffler had seen better days. (not sure if it was a glass pack type). SO... I added a little restriction. I went to the grocery store, and in the section where the brillo pads are, they sell Stainless Steel scouring "wool". I believe the brand was Chore-boy, but not 100% on this. Cut off a very small amount of this, 1/2" x 2" or 3" and pushed it up the engine side of the pipe. There is a baffle in the pipe so it didn't blow thru. The bike was quieter (not a lot), and stopped backfiring, BUT....the performance drop was notice-able. Also got a slight temp dis-coloration on the outside chrome in the area of the baffle. Heat build up at the restriction. So, is it worth messing with or is it cheaper to buy the kid some ear plugs.... ? I probably wouldn't do this if I was restoring for Show. But I'm restoring for playing. I like my hearing the way it is now, which isn't too good at 44 year of age, and will live with the discoloration. Tom Mack www.users.fast.net/~tommack/minibike.htm
