I'm currently restoring a Enduro and have run into a motor problem. The tag is missing from the motor so I have no idea of the exact model #. So far I have determined that it is a HS40.. been bored .010 with a new piston and rod. Whoever did this never really ran it afterwards because the honing marks are still there. After starting it I realised why... it knocks BAD. The problem is there is a ton of slop between the connecting rod and crank and I have no idea if the crank is worn or it has the wrong connecting rod. The crank does not look worn or chewed up in any way. Does anyone know what the correct size should be ?
Thanks Rob

First, Is it an original Rupp (tecumseh) engine? ? Many Rupp's have replacement engines. The Rupp engine should be a 4 HP with bearing supporting the output shaft. Enduro's did not have lighting coil. The OEM cranks for the Rupp HS40 with bearing (PN:33080) have not been made for 14 years. Heard the J-L Vintage sales is getting some machined. I do not know the cost. The 5 HP crank with same output size is also out of production (so said the local lawn mower dealer). There are some 5 HP cranks made for bearing output but I'm not sure of output shaft lenght, and the counter weights are larger than the 4's so something would have to be done so that the engine doesn't vibrate apart. As far as I can tell this is the original HS40 for the bike. It does have the output shaft bearing. Also as it turns out... this bike is probably a 72 Roadster 2. All the lighting has been stripped off along with the lighting coil.. the only remnants of the electrical system is the flywheel. I have a very large Tecumseh distributor located near me and took the crank to them to see if they could match it.. with no #'s. They kind of frowned but spent the better part of an hour taking measurments and think they found one. They called Tecumseh and was told the part # was from a VERY old motor but they have a few in stock. The crank should be here sometime this week and they are going to compare the two. If it is indeed a match I will post the Tecumseh part #. The only thing they could find between my crank and this new one was the length of the output shaft.. the new one is off by 3/64" ... should be able to compensate for that.

I was hoping somone here could steer me in the right direction. I have just purchased what I think is a 72 Enduro off ebay. It still hasn't got to me yet. But I'm already thinking ahead to what I'd like to do with it. I used to have a 75 Roadster-2 with a 5 hp that got stolen when I was a kid. And from my past I know I love night riding. Ok here is my question/problem........what will it take to to put a headlight on this thing? Is it even feasable? It seems each shop around me that I call.......gives me a different answer altogether on what I can/cannot do. Help Please...........Andy
