The '70 Roadster only came with the diaphram carburetor. The very early '71 models also used a diaphram carb, but were replaced soon after with the float style carb and the drop/slant manifold. Bill

Ruppman, I bought a 71 Roadster2 and it had a diaphram carb and regular intake manifold. After seeing other R2's with the bowl type carb, I assumed that I had the wrong carb/intake. Is there any way to know if I have the original carb or not? I've already purchased a replacement bowl carb from Ruppparts and found a slant intake on ebay. Is there much difference in performance between the two?
Thanks, Tom.

Tom, I had an early production purple '71 Roadster that had the straight intake manifold and the diaphram carb. This is the way the early model year '71 Roadsters came. I can tell you that the diaphram carb will not produce as much power as the float carb (with angled intake) will. The venturi size of the carb is smaller on the diaphram carb than on the float style carb. Bill

Would the seat tag number help identify if its an early model? I guess it doesn't really matter since I'll probably run the new float carb anyway. If the diaphram carb is the original, I'd like to hang on to it.

Tom, I have had 3 early production '71 Roadsters that all had serial numbers that started with a "C", just like the 1970 models did. Later, the serial numbers started with a "1".

Bill, I must have an early model '71 Roadster2 also. The seat sticker starts with a "C". So, that means the diaphram carb I have may well be the original? Did all your early production "C" Roadsters have that carb, or do you know?
Tom.
