hello just picked up a 70 roadster and was wondering if i need to use the jack shaft? thanx !

Yes you will need to retain the jackshaft because of the length of the chain and the rear suspension.As the suspension moves the chain tension changes.As the swing arm moves up and down the centerline of the rear axle does not stay the same distance away from the sproket on the jackshaft. If the chain is set with the correct tension with on one one the bike, the chain will become extremely tight as soon as there is a rider on it. It might be possible to replace the clutch assembly on the engine with a regular chain type clutch and then run a chain the full distance back but a chain tensioning system or sorts would be required. Ya if you don't use a jack shaft of some kind and run the chain strait to the rear sprocket the chain well jest keep falling off
